It is apt that a steel framed 45 storey skyscraper in the heart of downtown Perth in Western Australia will be home to lead tenant, BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company. Located at 125 St Georges Terrace, the building commenced construction in April 2008 and is expected to be completed by 2012.
The steel solution was chosen primarily due to speed and ease of construction. The designers wanted to use an external structural steel ‘mega frame’ to allow clear views of the Swan River and the Perth hills directly from the building’s central core. Through being included early in the design process, Steelpipe was able to optimise local supply options around pipe sizes and gauges that best suited the designers’ intentions.
Steelpipe met all key targets for manufacture and supply, managing ‘on-time’ delivery to the fabricator. The tower structure required 2,700 tones of spiral tube columns ranging from 760mm up to 1200mm diameter.
The client benefitted from Steelpipe’s ability to maintain consistent pricing during a time of dramatic volatility in global steel markets. This was achieved by leveraging our strong relationships with steel suppliers and through careful management of steel stocks.
